PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The local YANZHOU COAL MINING CO. (YZC) currently operates a coalmine with an installed production capacity of about 34 million tons per year (t/y). And, the company is now aiming to increase output by another 6 million t/y by the end of the year 2003. However, longer-term development plans are reportedly aimed at boosting output up to 100 million t/y by 2005.
The local YANZHOU COAL MINING CO. (YZC) currently operates a coalmine with an installed production capacity of about 34 million tons per year (t/y). And, the company is now aiming to increase output by another 6 million t/y by the end of the year 2003. However, longer-term development plans are reportedly aimed at boosting output up to 100 million t/y by 2005.
The upgrade project is reportedly part of a corporate development strategy aimed at better positioning the company for survival since the government seeks to consolidate the industry over the coming decade. As a result, YZC's primary focus is development in eastern China but to drive growth it will still need to add both products and acquisitions to boost efficiency.
Although the government has announced a policy of reducing its reliance on coal-fired thermal power plants in favor of greater development of natural gas, hydroelectric and nuclear facilities, coal is expected to retain its primacy for the foreseeable future.
As things currently stand, the company does not have to invest in technology to make coal more environmentally friendly because China's emission standards for coal-fired thermal plants are said to be the same as Japan's, while standards in Beijing are even higher. Nevertheless, it is our considered opinion, that China has no choice but to clean up its rate of emissions before the country chokes to death.
YZC employs a total staff of about 23,600 active in 6 mines. The company's principal activities include underground coal mining, preparation and processing.
